The American black bear is distributed throughout North America and has populations in at least 40 states in the U.S. It is estimated that there are at least 600,000 black bears on the continent. Historically, they occupied nearly all of the forested regions of North America, but in the U.S. they are now restricted to areas less densely occupied by humans. However, black bears are extremely adaptable and show a great variation in habitat types.
