Japanese Barberry was brought to the United States from Japan in the late 1800s. It was introduced as an ornamental plant and was widely used for landscaping. It is an invasive species that has spread to various parts of this trail. Invasive species pose a huge threat to the region's forests, as well as at Lacawac Sanctuary.
